This is the website of the Motor Vehicle Traders Register (MVTR).  The MVTR is operated by Trading Standards, a business unit of the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment.


Trading Standards

Trading Standards is a leading regulator responsible for protecting New Zealand consumers by keeping our marketplace free from unsafe and non-compliant products.

It has three work areas:

  1. Legal Metrology,
  2. Fuel Quality Monitoring and
  3. Consumer Product Safety.


Our work in these three areas aims to:

  • protect consumers and keep them safe
  • build consumer and business confidence
  • provide a level ‘playing field’ for business
  • support domestic and international trade.

What the MVTR does

The Motor Vehicle Traders Register (MVTR) holds essential information about registered traders and their business. You can register and maintain your registration online. You can also search the register for registered traders along with banned traders.

Enforcement & complaints

The Registrar of Motor Vehicle Traders is responsible for sections 95-119 of the Motor Vehicle Sales Act 2003. This includes investigating odometer tampering and motor vehicle traders who are trading illegally.
